Our Model

We are...

  • a trauma-responsive school that is committed to providing a safe space for our students to learn and grow.
  • a small school where teacher-student relationships are supportive, positive, and consistent.
  • committed to the implementation of the Boys Town Education Model to support our teachers as they manage their classrooms and our students as they work to manage their pathways through college, career and life.

We believe...

  • all students deserve to be surrounded by adults who believe in their unlimited, personal potential.
  • every student deserves an educational environment that is welcoming and safe.
  • that every child deserves rich educational, career, and social-emotional guidance and support in order to define the pathways to the options he or she chooses.

Our structure includes...

  • a 4x4 block schedule that accelerates a student's ability to earn credits and graduate.
  • a mini-lab period that offers elective courses: Senior Seminar, Understanding Trauma, Financial Literacy, Driver's Education, Robotics, Digital Music, and Online Credit Recovery options.
  • student participation in a weekly book group facilitated by "Literature for All of Us" whose mission is to use books and writing to facilitate circles of connection, healing, and growth in the face of social inequity. LFAOU invites participants to explore the transformative power of their own voices, in order to help build resilience.
  • the implementation of an interscholastic sports program through CAAEL or "Chicago Area Alternative Education League" whose mission is to provide alternative school educators a powerful set of tools to build hope and change lives.
